Bright Ideas: Another look

Wednesday, January 03, 2007

In July, Bright Ideas profiled Jennifer Coleman, an architect and founder of CityProwl Cleveland.

Here's an update:

Six months ago, Coleman had designed two digital walking tours of Cleveland neighborhoods - Lower Prospect Avenue and East Fourth Street, and the three downtown arcades.

The tours can be downloaded from a Web site to your iPod, MP3 player or cell phone. As you walk, Coleman explains the architecture, history and culture of the buildings and areas you see.

What has happened since:

"Things are going great," said Coleman, whose Web site has received more than 75,000 hits for her walking tours, and 1,000 downloads.

She hopes to have a third tour - the Warehouse District - posted by the beginning of February.

Coleman has moved her business into the WVIZ Idea Center in Playhouse Square. She's working on having five tours that are loaded on self-contained audio units by the end of spring.

Coleman is talking with a few Northeast Ohio institutions and cities about developing tours for them.

The Cleveland Foundation's Civic Innovations Lab has doubled its grant to her business to $30,000. Coleman is lining up sponsors to pay for future tours.
