CLEVELAND -- A local engineering alumni association is reaching out to high school students interested in an engineering career.
Earlier this year, the Northeast Ohio Alumni Extension of the National Society of Black Engineers was awarded a $30,000 grant from the Civic Innovation Lab in Cleveland. The group used the money to establish the Greater Cleveland National Society of Black Engineers Jr. Chapter.
Its first program is aimed at attracting high school students, especially underrepresented minorities, to pursue engineering. About 10 students currently participate. They meet once a month at Case Western Reserve University to interact with engineers and take part on hands-on activities. The alumni association wants to expand the number of high schoolers participating to about 30.
